Many hopeful adoptive parents feel barred from adoption by their financial circumstances, despite being able to offer a loving and enriching home to a child in need. Adoption is unfortunately quite expensive. There are lots of legal and administrative fees that need to be paid, as well as safety checks which we can all agree are essential. But with adoption ranging from $2,500 all the way up to $50,000 and sometimes even more, how can you afford to adopt?
The answer is: by getting a little creative. By thinking outside the box and doing some research, youll be amazed to discover some of the ways that adoption can become more affordable for you.
- Government Grants
Just like grants are available to college students, there are also grants available for potential adopters. What you are eligible for will depend upon your personal circumstances, but it still doesnt hurt to try. You may find filling out the necessary forms difficult at first, but once youve completed one application, youll find applying for further grants much faster and more straightforward.
- Employer Benefits
Many companies have employer benefits in place that can provide up to $10,000 per adopted child. To find out more youll need to speak to your HR department. Dont become disheartened if your company doesnt have a grant system in place, as you might be able to become the driving force for change in this matter.
- Working Overtime
Many sites will suggest picking up an extra job where possible. However, wed actually recommend avoiding this unless it is your only option. An extra job can be taxing upon your emotional and mental reserves and can put a strain upon you and your significant other. It also leaves you too drained to explore other viable options. Instead, wed recommend trying to pick up a few extra hours a week at your existing job if that is a possibility, as youll be surprised at how much extra cash a few extra hours can make.
- Audit your Expenses
Where possible, shave off some of the unnecessary expenses from your monthly budget. Do you have a gym membership when you only go once a week? If so, cancel it in favor of home workouts there are some great options on Youtube! Are you subscribed to multiple streaming services? Narrow it down to one! Youll find you have much lower monthly expenses by getting rid of unnecessary costs.
- Crowdfunding
Crowdfunding can be a great way to raise part or even all of the funds needed to adopt. If youre not comfortable using a site such as Go Fund Me, simply try reaching out to friends and family. Explain your situation and see who is willing to help you. Even if you dont receive cash, you may get second-hand baby items which can help reduce the cost of preparing your home for a new arrival.
